Character and world

I have thought a lot about what the character wirting this journal should be like, as we are only seeing this world through his eyes. For a while I have been thinking of a fantasy world where the different races traditionally found in fantasy worlds, for example elves, ork, vampires, are not different species but instead simply people who have adapted to their different enviorments over time.
For example the Vampires are a culture purly based around science and exploration, they have no religion, to the extent that they use the bodies of their dead in experiments and hold no sanctity over them. They grew up in a volcanic region where the sky was blocked out by smoke but as they began to us these volcanoes for power the smoke faded away and since they hadn't built up any immunity to they sun it proved deadly. so to combat this they built huge chimneys to belch thick black smoke into the sky and save them from the deadly sun. And they do not drink blood, instead they depend on a drink called "Nectar" that greatly extends they're life span and heals wounds however it is greatly addictive and is made from the very bodies of they're dead. They're love for technology is so great that they incoorperate it into they're body to improve themselves.
The character for this journal will the emperor of the vampires and so he needs to be both smart, selfish and arrogant. This character is greatly inspired by the character Kain from the Legacy of Kain game series.
here is a few videoes to demostrate what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFiLNc46jAM, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jws63E9dNN8, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2UW-kcYmm4.
I wish for the world to be one of death, as inspired by our trip to the graveyard. It will be both morbid and dark aswell as peacefull. I am greatly looking forward to writing this journal.

Steampunk

In terms of style and period, I want a steampunk style.  Steampunk began as a sub-genre of sci-fiction, and is based on the idea of 'what if the information revolution happened in the 1800's, it has since branched out and has in recently become a rather popular fashion movement. Steampunk often involves taking everyday modern objects, such as a computer, and modifieing it to fit in within a steampunk world, for example: http://steampunkworkshop.com/victorian-all-one-pc. here's a nice video explaining what steampunk is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b75vrsoT8qM. I really like this style and wish to set my journal piece with in a steampunk like world.

Final Piece Idea #1

Orginally I planned to write a script for my final piece but upon reflection, I'd prefer to try something a little different. That Is when I thought of one of my favourite game series Myst.
Myst is a puzzle game series that is primarily about exploring strange worlds called "Ages" that are travelled to via "Linking Books". In the series one of my favourite parts is reading through the various journals that are often found around these worlds.

Here are some examples from my favourite game in the series:

This gave me the idea of telling a story through a character's journal entries. It's a unique and very imersive way of telling a story and should be a nice change to the way I usually tell a story.
